Leah is afraid of heights. But somehow, during the fall of 2012, some friends persuaded her to climb onto the roof of an Oberlin College building. There, she found Kevin with some of his friends, who had persuaded him to do the same. They were both in their first semester of college, exploring hidden parts of the campus. It wasn't exactly "love at first sight," because it took them about eight more years to fall in love. But throughout their time as students, Kevin and Leah remained acquaintances. During the COVID-19 pandemic, while Kevin was in New York and Leah was in Japan, they reconnected over social media. This was almost as much of a coincidence as their meeting on the roof eight years earlier, because Kevin periodically deletes his instagram, and Leah keeps her instagram notifications silenced. Messages turned into emails, which turned into video calls. When Leah moved back to Ohio in August 2020, video calls turned into frequent phone calls and letters. Kevin moved to Ohio in the summer of 2021, and by the winter of 2022, they were engaged to be married - a little over a decade after that fateful meeting on the roof.
